Albir is one of the few places in Spain where there is a higher number of foreign born residents than there are Spanish born residents. There is a large expat community of Norwegian and Scandinavians. British, Dutch and German nationals. It is estimated that there are approximately 6,000 permanent residents with that number swelling during normal summer months when all the holiday apartments and villas are occupied.

The main features of Albir are the beach and the Sierra Gelada Natural Park and the walkway to Faro Del Albir (the lighthouse walk). In addition you will find a large selection of cafes, bars and restaurants. The town itself is very residential with only a few hotels. There are however a lot of tourists that make use of private apartments and villas. In the summer the town can be buzzing with people and activities. It is famous in Spain for the annual film festival that offers an outdoor cinema at the beach.

The town, or village as is sometimes used by locals, is served by a number of chain supermarkets, a medical centre, post office and tourist information centre.
