OK, so this is not an Albir restaurant but it definitely deserves a mention on Albir.Life.
When I first moved to the Albir/Benidorm area over 15 years ago this well known worldwide pizza chain had a restaurant in the centre of Benidorm. For some reason a few years later it just shut down and since then this area of Marina Baixa has been without a Pizza Hut.
I heard on the social media grapevine that a new mini restaurant take-away had recently opened in Benidorm so I had to take a look and try it out. I was pretty sure that it would be like so many other large chain restaurants in Spain and it just wouldn’t be the same as it is in the UK, Ireland, Holland etc. I was wrong, and pleasantly surprised.
I found the restaurant on Calle Gerona, just on the other side of the Avenida Europa crossing. Past Telepizza on the corner as you walk towards the old town. It looks new and modern. It is not like a traditional Pizza Hut restaurant with salad bar, buffet section and waiter service. Instead they offer you the fast food style restaurant, very similar to a KFC establishment.
You make your way to the counter, look at the wall menus and place your order. But the good thing, the smell. As soon as you walk inside it smells like a Pizza Hut, just as you always remembered it.
The menu is also very familiar. Your old favourites are all there. Hawaiian, Meat Lovers (Meat Feast), Pepperoni Feast, Supreme and Vegetarian etc.
You also get to choose which type of pizza base you want. They offer the Pizza Hut traditional base, the thick base pan pizza, the thin crust, the rolling pizza (like the old stuffed crust) or the new cheesy pops base. You can choose from three sizes. The individual, the medium or the family. Just like other fast food restaurants they also offer the menu option, where you get pizza, side, and drink for a fixed price. I paid €6,95 for the individual menu of a traditional crust supreme pizza, two pieces of garlic bread and a can of Pepsi. Cans of Heineken are available as your drink selection.
Once you have ordered, go find a table. Either inside or on the terrace. When your order is ready it is brought to you. The pizzas arrive on large wooden style paddles. The taste is also just as you remember. From the distinctive texture of the pizza base to the perfectly chosen toppings.
You can tell immediately that this is a Pizza Hut pizza.
